The 19th of November is marked as World Toilet Day every year. It has been an annual United Nations Observance since 2013.

In line with this year's World Toilet Day theme, IWRA is organising a webinar that will look at the importance of safe sanitation systems to protect groundwater.

According to UN Water, inadequate sanitation systems spread human waste into rivers, lakes and soil, contaminating the water resources under our feet. Safely managed sanitation protects groundwater from human waste pollution. The panelists in this webinar will focus on the connection between such safe sanitation practices, human rights, and groundwater, and discuss what actions can be taken to protect groundwater.

Topics include:

  • Connecting the dots of sanitation and groundwater
  • The Link between the Human Right to Water and Sanitation and to Groundwater
  • We’re not sitting around – the activation of youth for groundwater and sanitation
  • What actions for groundwater do you want to see member state’s commit to during the UN
  • Water Summit on Groundwater in Paris in December, and during the UN 2023 Water Conference in NY?
  • What commitments can we take today for groundwater and sanitation?

Speakers:

  • Michael Campana - Professor of Hydrogeology & Water Resources Management at Oregon State University
  • Amanda Loeffen - CEO at Human Right2Water
  • Michel Frem - Chair, UNESCO Groundwater Youth Network
Moderator: Lindsey Blodgett, Webinar Officer, IWRA
